Catering Waste issues? Food Recycling on-site could solve them.

Catering waste or commercial food waste can be difficult to dispose of in an environmentally friendly way.

Until recently the acceptable solution was to have it collected and then dumped in a landfill hole, this is still the most common and cheapest solution for catering food waste, but it is no longer an acceptable practice.

On-site food waste recycling is now a practical, viable, completely environmentally friendly solution for most catering outlets including schools, hotels, cafe's and restaurants. As long as you have some ground, even a small garden, on which to spread the rich compost then on-site composting is a practical solution that works.

The Ridan composter promotes what is a truly natural process, creating ideal conditions for the rapid transformation of food waste into rich nutritious compost.

Food Recycling - Converting food waste into compost and using that to grow more food.

If we wish to keep this earth turning and supporting life, we will need to look after it. Food recycling can make a significant contribution.

GlobeW

It is estimated that 11.8 million tonnes of household food waste is produced each year in the UK alone. Most of this food could have been eaten, but instead was thrown into landfill where it rots and produces toxins. If recycled at source this food waste could be used to enrich the soil and grow more food.

This waste of good food is costing hugely not only in money but crucially as damage to the environment where it makes a massive contribution to greenhouse gas production and hence global warming.

It is estimated that 20% of the UK’s greenhouse emissions are associated with waste food. If we were to use or compost all of our waste food we could prevent the emission of at least 15 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.

Landfill

Landfill sites emit greenhouse gases and toxic liquid effluent which can leach into the soil and waterways, they also require large areas of land. It takes 30 years for a landfill site to stabilise and stop emitting global warming gases such as carbon dioxide and methane - a greenhouse gas 25 times more damaging than carbon dioxide. There is limited landfill space left in the UK and new landfill sites are difficult to find. Would you want one next to you?

Ridan

So what does the Ridan do to stop this?

If a canteen that produces 5 tones of kitchen waste each year sent all of its food waste to a land fill, it would produce the same amount of carbon dioxide as the average car over a whole year!
By processing this same food through a Ridan composter and then spreading the compost produced onto a garden, you lock away the carbon dioxide in a good way, nourishing the soil, so that it can be used by plants to grow and complete the cycle in a natural way.
