Recycling School Waste is a fantastic way to educate and demonstrate sustainable living.

How to recycle your school food waste

It is now possible to recycle all common school waste products, most will need to be collected and sent to a centralised recycler, but the school food waste can now be recycled on-site, at source without any further environmentally damaging emissions. In fact the compost produced will enrich the school soil so that more carbon consuming plants can be grown, a real win win situation!

Vegetables
If your school has some gardens or grounds then you can recycle all of your food waste right there, as soon as it has been discarded off the plate or out of the kitchen. All food can be composted, raw or cooked, meat, eggs, fish and dairy products by using a Ridan, but which one?

We offer a range of three Ridan Food Waste Composters, one of which will be suitable for your school. The best way to decide which size of Ridan you need is to measure how many litres of food waste are produced by your school each week, if it is less than 80 litres then choose the Mini, between 80 and 200 litres then choose the Standard, between 200 and 400 litres choose the Big, if your school produces over 400 litres of food waste each week then you may need to use two Big Ridans.
If you don't know how much food waste is being produced then the following is a rule of thumb.
Under 120 pupils - Mini Ridan
Between 120 and 450 pupils - Standard Ridan
Over 450 pupils - Big Ridan
However it all depends upon just how efficient the kitchens are, how much fresh produce is prepared on site, and what sort of foods are being thrown away. Vegetable matter, fruit and greens compost easily and quickly, but meat eggs and dairy take longer.

The compost that emerges from the Ridan should be matured before being used on the garden for two to three months in a suitable maturation bin such as the Ridan 900. Usually these are used in pairs so that as one is being filled the other can be left alone to mature before the compost is harvested. Most schools use one Ridan with two Ridan 900 maturation bins to form a complete food waste recycling system.
