Community food waste recycling at the Coast Café in Worthing
‘Coast Cafe des Artistes is situated at the quiet eastern end of Worthing’s fine 5 mile beach, 300m east of the best pier in the country. People come here every day because the coffee and the food is so good – sitting perfectly with the view of the sea, the beach and that pier.’ Well we can confirm both the coffee and food are fantastic. But even more newsworthy is their newly installed Ridan Food Waste Composter. Situated just a stones throw off the path as your strolling along Worthing promenade tucked in behind the Coast Cafe. Our most coastal Composter so far.
Creative Waves and Coast cafe contacted us with a joint commercial and community based project. The cafe needed a sustainable solution to their food waste and Creative waves needed compost for their community project, the Bugcycle Garden. Bugcycle is creative, educational, nature garden using re-cycled materials so perfect that even their compost was recycled waste food from the cafe round the corner! The whole project was made possible by a grant from Worthing Council.
The Creative waves Bugcycle project use a previously disused piece of land in Beach House Park, donated by Wothing Borough Council. It is in the process of being transformed into a creative, educational, sensory garden for everyone to enjoy. They started early 2015 by building a spectacular living Willow Dome, an event which saw 170 people come together to help. They have many exciting plans to create new habitats to attract local wildlife and insects. The team are already working with local community groups and schools to make unusual planters and sculptures out of recycled objects and plant flowers and vegetables.
We visited the garden while we were there and can see it will become an important community hub with plenty of exciting projects going on to involve everyone. We look forward to photos next summer of the produce edible and aesthetic!www.creativewaves.co.uk www.coastworthing.co.uk
