Sussex Coast College in Hastings, Sussex run some fantastic courses and now composting is on the agenda along with everything else. Food waste from the college restaurant which is staffed by students will be taken to the Ridan food waste composting system which is sited just outside the college. Here it will be composted by students who will operate the Ridan and learn about how food waste composting works. Next the students will use the compost in the growing beds where they will learn about horticulture.
Practical outdoor activities which involve students, getting them out of the classroom with structure and focus in a creative environment offer a huge variety of learning possibilities. Sustainability is the foundation topic but horticulture, science and engineering are all involved.
